Cheap 454 mods
Ok guys open for suggestions. 1996 22 Powerquest Gen 6 454, Scored the tall Merc aluminum intake with bronze water passages (salt use), Purchased a new take out cam 224@50 with 483 lift roller for $35.00 going to run 1.8 rockers so will work out to be 510ish lift, Holley 750, searching for heads now motor has P-nut heads. (JUNK)
Tempted just to install what I have and see what it does. Know rocker studs will be required and rectangular port intake is a miss-match. Intake is not a big deal we use Ford CJ port intakes on non-CJ port heads all the time, motor picks up every time.

With that small of a cam, you should be running a dual plane intake. You will never see the flows to justify a single plane and will most likely loose power across the entire rpm range compared to a stock magnum intake.

Agreed...
Note: Your new cam is smaller than a stock 454/365 magnum cam. 220/510

The intake is a DP, see cams below not a lot biger but the 1.8 rockers did add lift. How big is a 500HP cam? Looking for better heads.....any help?

I thought you were talking about the HP500 intake originally. With that cam and intake, you are basically building a 454 magnum. I think you are going to have the very low compression pistons. In order to make power, you will most likely have to go with some heads with 110cc chambers.

hoping it will make 385 ish with good heads. Going low-buck for now. May move up to a 496 or 540 next year. Just got the parts cheap so what the heck. Would love more cam but have not see many 4 sale.

Not sure if it is option for you or not, but I found some pretty good deals, looking for left over parts at some speed shops. Both marine and automotive. Might do some calling and find a set of iron head take offs swaped for some AFR's. I know used parts make some people cringe but everybody has X-Amount of money for a project.

He is going to need some smaller chamber heads to make decent compression. Rect ports won't do very well unless he mills them quite a bit. Try to find a set of heads with 110cc chambers. Maybe some Vortec heads would work as well.
