I have a 95 Baja Outlaw 24ft with a 454EFI motor in it, I had the muffs slip off the outdrive when I was testing it before splashing it in the drink, it only ran for a few seconds and didn't hurt the motor, but, it smoked the impeller in the sea water pump [when I pulled the hose off there where chunks of rubber in it, NEVER a good sign!]

Anyway, all the marina's around here want me to bring the impeller in, so, they can "match it up", I was wondering if anyone had a part number from Mercury for the "impeller Kit"? so, I can reference that when I try to order one, problem being, the boat is at my cottage 2 hours away...........and so is the impeller!

I also wondered how hard this is to change?, I posted on another forum, but, got mixed responses. CAN it be changed without pulling the entire pump?, do you have to loosen off the belt tension or not?, can I just pull the 4 bolts out of the back of the sea water pump and change it there?, any other tips or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

You need to pull the pump off, and change the impeller. Those little bastar*s can be stiff & a pain to get back together sometimes. Almost impossible to put in with the pump on the boat.
If you have the ser. # of the engine, most any dealer can get you the right impeller, or BAM or someone like that.

You can change the pump housing and impellor fairly easy on your 95 Outlaw, I have done mine several times without pulling the whole pump. But you will need to remove the batteries and get next to the engine to do it and I'm not that small. It's not hard.

I just changed mine last week as a precautionary measure. I just went to my local Baja dealer and bought the impeller and the housing. They were able to look the part number up with no issues. I just wet the impeller before sliding it into the housing. I changed mine with the pump on, from start to finish about an hour job. The bolts aren't necessarily easy to get to, but with a little patience it's not a big job.

Hey Phil, thanks for the PM!, I have looked at the serial number, and it appears to have "yellowed" or the protective film over it has discoloured, either way, I cant read it, which sucks since a lot of parts seem to be sourced from it!

I think I should be able to do it, I can get access to the bolts pretty easy as my batteries "sit back" towards the stern a fair bit, I also had a buddy tell me its easier to just lye across the top of the engine [port to starboard] and reach down to work on the impeller, I am not a small fella [6ft2, 220lbs] but, if it will save some money and save me hauling the boat somewhere, I will squeeze my fat, old arse in there somehow!!

I guess I misspoke. It would be a nightmare to try to change the impeller on my boat, partifcularly the stbd engine.. If you have enough room where you can get to it, I guess you could do it, but why would you want to? It's not that hard to get the pump off.

I think the reason why I didn't want to take the whole pump off is because I didn't want to fool around with the fuel pump and the belts. It is fairly easy on a 24 Outlaw to just pull the housing and impellor off. Now that I have done it a few times it only takes me about half hour to do.
