help gear heads........
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
not my formula, but my old boat i am trying to sell.
89 454 carb engine
blows big time smoke out starboard side exhaust,
open pipes, not twined.
only after high speed run, then shut down and re start.
doesn't smoke without being turned off.
no blow by on crank vent in valve covers, either side
i am hoping valve seals on one bank.

I would say guides. When you shut it off oil runs down the guides into the cylinder or cylinders then burns off when you restart. It's probably smoking when running also you just can't see it.Just put new guide seals on that side.It can be done without removing the head.

do you mean guides or seals?
are seals and quide seals the same thing?
seals can be done without removing head,
can quides\guide seals?

Guide seals allowing oil to run down in the guide.Guide seals can be done with the head on. To replace guides you must remove heads. The stock type guide seals start off as soft rubber. After the engine is run several years the seals turn hard like plastic. Then they start breaking up and it's like not having a seal at all.Usually the pieces stay contained with in the valve spring depending on how small the are.
