Idle question
#1
Have hawk 525's; 454's, dom 1050's, w/ b&m 250. The last couple weekends the idleing has been off. first was idling around 1k in neutral, so we adjusted a little to bring them down to 500-600. but when going in gear they drop to below 200 on occassion & i really have to keep an eye on them when trying to dock cause they will die. this weekend they were back to 1k in neutral. is this something i am going to have to adjust often or do i need to adjust elsewhere? wasnt sure if temp had anything to do w/ it or something else needs tweaked. boat run strong when underway tho.

the velocity in the ports on those motors with a carb that size at idle is near zero. the signal the idle circuit must be seeing is very very weak... i am not surprised at all to hear your description...
i would guess that 1000 is about the best you are going to do. i am not intimately familar with the idle circuit on that carb but with the cams that thing must have you probably have nothing like enough signal to get the thing to idle at 600... one thing you can try and its only a suggestion is that IF you think it could tolerate it ( and i wouldn't experiment... i would call hawk and ask) you might put a couple more degrees of intial timing in it which will perk it up a bit but for all the obvious reasons, you have to be careful considering your set up...

if its something that is normal, i can deal w/ it. just wasnt sure we could make it run a little better or not.

The high temps and humidity last weekend at the lake should have made them idle lower.
You want them to idle around 850rpm nuetral and 700rpm in gear. You may have to play with the carb air bleed screws until you get it just right, and not just the single idle speed screw.

also the timing has a great deal to do with idle quality, with the blower setup you want little to no advance, = more initial to clean up the idle. I ran only 10 deg advance and a total of 26, buy you can also lock the dist. no advance and run 26....Rob

I think you are all overlooking something here he didnt say anything about making ANY changes that would have resulted in the lower idle. it just started doing it out of the blue so my .02 its atmospheric conditions or something has changed as far the state of tune of the motor/motors , highly unlikely the same thing would be wrong with BOTH so my guess the atmospheric

I don't think he has ever really got it dialed in yet since its relatively new to him and he's been doing a lot of upgrades. BD boated LOTO last weekend and the conditions should have lowered idle quality. It was extremely hot and humid.
