Start with 7 qts and then check the stick. My stock 502's take almost eight, but you will not find that in writing anywhere.

I just changed my oil today in a 99 HP500.

7 Qts puts it just above the "add oil" line. The original Merc Racing owners manual for the HP500/Bulldog/525SC states 8 qts.....so it is written somewhere. I just didn't see it till after I had bought 7 quarts, so I'll be topping off with another later.

I changed mine this past weekend, and started with 7qts, but ended up adding an additional qt. for a total of 8.

Oil is left over in the bottom of the pan in the lines and the cooler. I start with 5 and end up using close to but not quite 7. If you have a fresh cleaned out rebuild first time oiling will be 8 Quarts as stated in the manual.
