Default Prop size- gear ratio

I see a big difference in props on the same boats and I know a 502 won't use a 5 to 7 inch difference over a 454. Is it gear ratio? I also understand high altitude boats use different gears. Just exactly is the scoop?? How many differant ratios are there?
Thanks Zoobed

gear ratio's from 1.34:1 all the way to 2.20:1 are out there, the common one's are 1.34:1 to 1.65:1 depending on hp and boat.
