Default what are most of you guys running for flywheels ?

I have to have my rotating assembly balanced this week coming up
and I went to get my flywheel out of the shed and I forgot how heavy the damn thing was when I took it off

I have a Gen VI 454 motor and Bravo drive setup

is it possible to use a flexplate ?
or even a lightweight flywheel like you would on a manual trans setup in a car ?

let me know what you guys are using thanks

motor should put out close to 550 hp when done also

Use the heavy flywheel. There is a reason for it, somone else may have the answer.

okay so I should keep the one that came on the motor then
or you would recommend going with the GM one in that link from Jegs,

I actually use a heavier Hays billet steel flywheel. It is heavier than the cast iron one you have. I will use a cast iron flywheel until about 750 hp. After that, I go to the billet steel.
With the engine going in a boat, you need the inertia of the heavy flywheel when you put it in gear. If you used a lighter flywheel, you would have problems with the engine wanting to stall when you go into gear.

Okay thanks for explaining that to me it makes sense
Im only planning on around 550hp so i will stick with the stock one,
my boat originally came with an alpha setup and Im now switching over to a Bravo setup,
the bolt pattern should be the same for the drive coupler between the alpha and the bravo right ?

yes their the same but with 550 hp your going to have to change the coupler to a hp one..your also going to have to get the flywheel ballanced to your bottom end unless you didnt ballance your rotating assembly..if they internallt ballanced your assembly then theirs a whole different way to approach the ballancing method..you may have to change to a 427 style flywheel and harmonic ballancer..

okay I'll look into the HP drive coupler
Im having the rotating assembly balanced before assembly which is hopefully in another week or two
