Default Thermostat location question 330/454

I have 454/330's that I recently bought thermostats for. The question is simply where do they go? According to the parts diagram they appear to go in the middle of the thermostat housing underneath a collar that appears too press down on the thermostat to keep it in place. Is this right? or do they go in the intake manifold as in car?

you are correct...they go under that sleeve (it should have a slot in it for alignment)..and then the cover plate sandwiches it in the housing.

Some used the collar and some didn't. Most didn't. Either way it goes to the top NOT on the intake. Pictures above show both ways.
