Miss Geico Wins 19th Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix
Powerboats Join In Harbor Day Celebration on Hudson River
NEW YORK, September 14, 2009 – The fifty-foot Miss Geico Racing Catamaran gave New York City a little something extra this weekend by winning the Super Boat Grand Prix powerboat race on the Hudson River. The city, never without major events, was treated to a very exciting Super Boat race Sunday afternoon. With the river closed down for competition, both the New Jersey and New York riverbanks were lined with spectators cheering on their favorite race teams.
“This weekend just couldn’t have been any better, and I think this is the best race we have ever had here. New York is one of the best races on our circuit and, this year to be apart of the 400-year celebration of the Hudson River, closing out Harbor Day with a boat race is a privilege,” says John Carbonell, founder of Super Boat International. “The support we get from the different communities is great and it seems to get better every year.”
Marc Granett, driver of Miss Geico, says today’s victory wasn’t without surprises and engine trouble. “While, the water here looks flat, it was really quite choppy. There were some big rollers out there and we took some big hops and leaps all over the racecourse. There was one roller I bet was 6 feet, it just came out of nowhere.” The 50-foot cat, while leading the field, encountered a compressor problem on lap seven and it was all they could do to just keep the boat going. Granett continued, “along with the engine problems, we had a fuel problem and the boat wouldn’t come out of the corners. Even, with our problems, we are very happy about the win”
Adding to the New York events, The Super Boat Caveman pace boats appeared on the CBS Early Show Saturday morning. The team delivered the Super Boat pace boats to the CBS plaza for a live weekend segment.
Local favorite Peter Meyer, owner the Seminole Hard Rock Casino Superboat Vee Unlimited was very happy how the day turned out. “What a great day. I had lots of friends and family here this weekend to watch the race and with the weather turning out perfect Sunday, it was just a good race. I’m really happy with another win this season, I’m going to enjoy it while I can,” says Meyer.
Super Boat Unlimited winner, Chris Cox of SuperHeat, was also pleased with another win this season. “My team is great and they give me a good boat every time. Joey [Imprescia – throttleman] and I just got out there and wanted to run a solid race. I think we did that and to have all our family around and watching was just great. It turned out to be another solid performance”, says Cox.
Super Boat concluded the New York Grand Prix Sunday afternoon, the sixth race on the national series circuit, amongst many of the Dutch vessels and parade boats that participated in the final day of Harbor Day.
Race fans unable to attend the event can also watch the Panasonic 19th Annual New York Super Boat Grand Prix on CBS Sports. The upcoming races will appear on Saturday afternoon “CBS Sports Spectacular” line-up this fall. The first show is scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd at 2:00 p.m. EST.
