Default oil pan size

I'm thinking about putting on a 14 qt Kiekhaefer oil pan on my engine I'm building.. For those not following my posts its a 440 ci bbc that will be putting out about 510-530 hp at 6200 rpms. My question is would this be overkill? Dennis Moore states in his book nothing over an 8 qt pan is really needed. Opinions?

Dennis Miller the comedian???????? or Dennis Moore???

For what you have, I think 14qts is way overkill. An 8-10qt pan should be plenty.

are you going to run it like a race boat, can you picture yourself running it at 6200 for 15 or 20 minutes? If the answer is yes buy the bigger pan,you can run still it a few quarts low too to let the oil warm up quicker and give you extra clearence from oil hitting crank when bouncing,Smitty

lol, typo- I changed that! I don't need people thinking I'm taking engine advice from dennis miller.

Artic-
So running a 14 qt pan @ 11 to 12 qt is ok? I doubt I'll ever run at that RPM for more than 2-3 minutes.

I run my 14 qt pan a few qts low unless I'm going on a really long 100-200 mile run,Smitty

Wink If Large is Good then Bigger Must be Better??

For your use, save your money and run an 8-10 quart quality marine pan, a properly sized oil cooler with an oil thermostat. You'll be fine!

Its not so much over engineering as it is overspending!
