what are the opinions out there for the following:
why arn.t they made any more?
reliability and performance?
and at what hours given good care do these need
refreshing and what does it usualy entail?

looking at a boat with 225 hrs on them

At about 400HP and about the same torque, they were just to expensive for Mercury Racing to build and sell against the big blocks, even the 496 as a MAG produces about 460ft/lbs of torque and nearly as much power at about 2/3 the cost of a 377 Scorpian.
Simple performance marine engine economics 101!
Remember Raylar's and others mottos,
"There Aint No Replacement for Displacement"!
As for refreshening, check with Mercury Racing they should have some good info on that subject.
A good compression test and leak down test can also tell you alot except for valve springs, merc can answer that question best.
