A buddy of mine had a 99 33 avs poker run ed. with the 600 dpxs he loved it until it started throwing prop blades and destroyed the lowers a couple times i think it thew 5 or 6 blades then he traded it for a 38 avs with efi 500 hps this is why i am looking for one with merc power. hey fan where are you from? thanks for turning me on to the guys in austin we are in neg. on a 99 33 avs james.

I have two in a 2000 Formula 382 and one in a 1998 28' BatBoat. Never ever had any prop problems. (I back off the throttle when I'm in the air.)

Closed cooling, start and run great, NEVER stall around the docks, and the shift interrupters work like a dream. They have more balls and cost $15k (each!) less than 575's. All good hardware - Bowtie block, JE pistons, Manley valves, Crane valve train, Mellings oil pump, Crower crank and rods, Holley injection, Michigan bearings, Eickert manifolds, etc. Drives were marginal when mounted high and abused, (but then no one EVER breaks Bravos, do they?) Volvo lost interest, but Innovation still has 5-6 engines that they will let go for about $23k each - a bargain.

Thanks C-spray for the info. I understand that Formula sold about 27 38's with the Volvo's and only had a few problems (maybe driver problems?). I am looking at a 38 scarab with the 600's and appreciate the feedback!

Scarab - No problem, I've been happy with my stuff. Just remember - when you come back into the water, there are two sets of props hooking up on ech drive, not just one.

I guess that I came on a bit sarcastic in my reply, but everybody complains about Mercury and their pricing, and then when somebody comes along and offers something to compete, very few people will put their $$$ where their mouth is. Scarab probably build more DPX performance boats than anybody. Wellcraft (Genmar) doesn't have any extra love for Mercury.

There are 2 versions of the DPX: the DPX-hp, which is sort of blocky-looking, and has a separate upper gearcase, and the DPX-a, which is swoopier-looking (kind of like the OMC Cobra), and has the upper gearcase as part of the intermediate housing. The DPX-a's are rumored to be "a little" stronger, but all of the internal components are exactly the same betweent he two versions. The steering package is very, very nice on both versions. Good luck with your shopping.
