I've been curious for awhile and I'm sure it's been discussed at length on here in the past, but when did Wellcraft stop building the performance offshore line of boats or "Scarabs"?
Seems as they did quite well for many years and were a leader in the industry for over 30yrs.
Also what was the "Larry Smith" relationship to all of this?
Thanks!!!

The last performance Scarabs built by Wellcraft were in 2002. Larry Smith is the original designer and builder of the Scarab line. Wellcraft began licensing the name and working with Larry Smith to build the boats under the Wellcraft envelope. Due to a shrinking high performance market share and the need to pay royalties/fees to Larry Smith for the continued use of the Scarab trademark, Wellcraft decided to leave the high performance market. A couple years later, Wellcraft purchased the Scarab trademark outright from Larry Smith and began building the Scarab fishboats again. Not really Scarabs at all to all us diehard fans.

I bet they're happy they made that decision today. They had a huge line up of Scarab's back in the day, I would just scale back and have a couple of boats like a 38' & 43'.
Was Kevlar first used in hulls by Scarab? How many models used KV hulls and for how long?

Do not confuse KV hulls with Kevlar. When the Scarab such as the 38KV uses the "KV", the "KV" stands for KAAMA Version. And this does not mean KAAMA drives, they mostly came with TRS. If you are looking at a Wellcraft built Scarab, after the HIN # it will have KEVLAR under it, if it is Kevlar.
