Default What kind of grease goes where?

Do you guys use different kinds of grease for different things?
I know Merc has Gimbal grease, spline grease, u-joint grease, etc. Is it neseccary? I have some Penziol Marine grade grease I use in the trailer bearings, would it hurt to grease the gimbal and coupler with that?

I just use a good quality grease from napa or any parts store. Grease is grease. If you look at the break-up of grease it’s all bonded the same. Some may argue, but that’s my .02

I have never understood "marine grade" grease. I was told that "marine grade" is water resistant but what grease isn’t? Oil and water don’t ever dissolve in each other???

I was thinking maybe some grease would breakdown easier, and some will hold up to higher temps. I figured maybe the gimbal needed heavier duty stuff.
I guess im just curious to what the difference between axle grease and gimbal grease is.

If you ask me it is just the name and the price tag. I use the same grease in both and don’t think twice about it. If you think about how many times an axle hub spins in relationship to the gimble there isn’t much difference. I was bored one day and I actually made some friction calculations and could not find reasonable cause to justify anything. To be honest the wheel hub / axle grease had a higher coefficient on the wheel bearing than it did on the gimble.

i'm guessing that Mercury has done a lot of R&D on lubricants and grease since they have warranty on the products they sell (up to five years in some cases) why would you want to skimp on something thats so important like a engine coupler or gimball brg??
