Default Repairing/rebuilding the merc sea water pump?

Anyone rebuilt one of these pumps before? Is it possible? When I pulled the plastic pump body off this year, i noticed what seemed to be a bit of oil between the stainless plate and the seal to the gear box. Not sure if the seal is leaking or not, but was thinking about replacing it. Anyone been here before that can give me the scoop?

I'm talking more than just the water pump repair kit. I'm talking an actual seal around the shaft, not the oring......

Im actually doing this to one of my pumps now. It felt as if it had a bearing going south. There really isnt that much to it. There are two skf 6204 bearings inside, a few seals, and thats about it. You will need a puller to get the bearing off the shaft though, and a puller to pull the pulley mount off.

I still have to measure up the seals, and order them thru grainger or msc. Merc wants like 14 bucks a seal, theres 3 of them. They are 2 dollar standard type seals.

You need to pry the shaft seal out of the housing, the one thats behind the pulley mount. Behind that you will find a snap ring. Remove that. Then you will be able to tap the shaft out, and the bearings will come out with the shaft. if the bearings need to be replaced, you need a puller to remove them. You will also need a puller to remove the pulley mount from the shaft.

The shaft it .750, small seals are 1.254x.312 wide. The bearings are standard 6204 style shielded on one side. All in all, pretty easy.

Does the pully come off the shaft first? If so, how does it come off?

You can use a standard GM power steering pulley remover/installer, found at most auto parts stores. Many of them will have them available for rent/loan.

Ya, you gotta use a puller to remove the pulley off the shaft first.
