I have a leaking shift cable bellow on my 21... I ordered both the u-joint and shift bellows- mercury. Along with clamps and the merc adheasive...

I'm checking engine alignment while I'm at it, along with u-joints and the gimbal bearing.

Any tips or tricks to this? Sounds pretty straight foreward from everything I've read...

I pulled the drive off and everything looks great inside the u-joint bellows! U-joints look new and the gimbal bearing is silky smooth with absolutely no play... it took me longer to drag the tools back there than it did to pull it. The drive slid right off, and everything was well greased it appears. I was worried about what I'd find, but I remember that the previous owner had some drive work done and was glad to see everything in such great shape. No water whatsoever in the u-joint bellows.

How many of you use merc adheasive on both sides of the bellows? or not necessary because of the ring? Also, from what I saw the new u-joint bellow comes with a ring?

I Glue both sides,also front and back,make sure you pay attention which way the bellow goes on,the position of the front clamp//also their should be a TOP embedded in the front by the hose clamp of the bellow...when installing the rear ring theirs a special driver for it to install it correctly,,it looks like a big seal driver..i also glue it in place with the bellow adhesive..

before you start the process make sure you have all the proper tools at hand to do the job correctly, you will need to remove the hinge pins to do the job which is also another special tool that merc supplies..

I glue the front only.
Also you can use a zip tie instead of the funky clamp for the shift bellow small side.

I use adhesive at both locations but you don't need to. The hinge pins can be removed with an allen wrench.

IF your shift cable isn't leaking I wouldn't replace it unless you are really worried about it because you can do the drive shaft without pulling the hinge pins. My shift cable was corroded in the the bellhousing and I had to drill it out.

My shift cable is the culprit... I don't really see any need to pull the hing pins? To me it looks like I can get everything changed out with the belhousing in place?

I might buy that ring driver, though... was planning on seeing how hard it is to drive the new one on, but I really don't want it to leak.... I'll look it up. Already have the alignment tool.

I changed all 3 of my bellows without removing the bell housing. It was supposed to be more difficult but mine slipped right in.

Alpha or Bravo?
