Interesting price point considering you can buy a complete boat (used) with 1075 power for less than the engine/drive costs alone. I would also think the buyer is now thinking of the new concept of disposable engines. Buy new power from an independent engine builder, run them until they blow up and buy a new set. Even after 3-4 seasons of this you still wouldn't have spent the money that Mercury got up front for their stuff.

Do engine manufacturers follow the same guidelines as boat manufacturers do for issuing HIN's? Can an engine & drive built in June be referred to as a "2011" model, or are you saying that they have pre-sold their inventory for the next 16 months? If it is the latter, talk about a home run for a product introduction!

That's not surprising, considering you're getting an engine capable of 1300+ horsepower, AND a brand new drive that will handle it, that will both run for hundredS of hours. That was TOTALLY unheard of not too long ago.

Well, first regardless of when the engines are built they won't be delivered until September, which technically speaking is the beginning of the "new model year" (hence 2011).

However, I just got off the phone with my contact at Mercury Racing, and the 1300/1350 is sold out for 2010.

How many engine does that mean? Mercury Racing does not give out that information. But MTI has ordered ten, and according to several sources a few other builders are not too far behind that. According to Fred Kiekhaefer, the president of Mercury Racing, the company can build up to 400 of those engines if they plan for it.

Obviously given the current of the economy and particularly the high-performance powerboat industry, Mercury Racing won't plan to produce that number of 1300/1350 engines anytime soon.
