I believe, based on the manual, that I have the proper NMEA output type on my Garmin to run a Livorsi GPS speedo head, but even after reading the Livorsi tech data and Garmin's, I am only about 75% sure.
Has anyone run a GPS speedo head and used an existing GPS output? A full-blown GPS speed is over 400 bucks with antenna, whereas one using an existing GPS antenna/output is less than 200.
Any input? If you have, how hard is the setup?

Yes you can do that. Use the NMEA 0183 + wire from your Garmin and connect it to the S terminal on the back of your speedo. You then have to go into the settings on the Gramin and make sure the NMEA 0183 output is turned on and it is set at 4800 baud.
You can do this from your owners manual, it is very easy.

Hey guys... I hear this can be done... However before I start making calls I thought I would ask specifically.
I just installed a Garmin 4208
I have an older model (battery in the antenna) Livorsi Speedo which stopped working this year. I expect it to be the antenna battery.
I can send the entire unit back to livorsi for a little over $200.00
I was about to do that until someone said I could run a wire from the GPS network to the Livorsi Speedo.
From the sound of it here, this can be done. But do I need to order a wire? What specifically should I be asking for and who should I call for it? Livorsi? Garmin? Is it something that can be picked up at a Best Buy?
Thanks..

No, you literally need just a piece of wire, the speedo head will have a red, black, and usually a grey or orange wire. The GPS will have a blue or brown wire for NMEA output, just connect them. There are several threads on here about it.

I think it just needs an NMEA 0183 output, I have not hooked up one of the new GPS's with network connections, seems like it should still have the output though.

Just as previously mentioned, a friend (who is more electronically minded) hooked it up in just a few minutes. We downloaded the Garmin owners manual off the internet and followed the directions. She works like a charm.

I just did this very thing two days ago and it worked great and very easy. I have a Livorsi gps speedo with dead antenna battery and a 4008 Garmin gps. As per manual, I just connected the orange speedo wire to the blue wire from Garmin GPS unit-not Garmin antenna by the way. Read the Garmin manual to make sure your NMEA settings are correct and you are set. So far, it does seem like you will have to make sure your gps is on for the speedo to work unless mine isn't set right for that.
