can i replace a seal or do i need to replace the whole thing?

There is a rebuild kit available from Merc.

I just rebuilt one a couple of weeks ago using the kit from Merc. Way cheaper than buying new. I needed the entire rebuild kit. You may only need the seal (o-ring) kit. Tear it down first before you buy the parts so you only get what you need.
