Default merctrans repair

The transmission fits perfectly in a 18x18x18 box and UPS ships virtually anywhere in the contiguous U.S. for around sixty dollars @ seventy six pounds.....If entertaining an overhaul, modifications should be made for oil pressure containment, and cooling.

I don't know how mechanically inclined you are but to rebuild one of these transmissions is about equal to rebuilding a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine. There is only 2 gaskets in them which you can easily make yourself. The o-rings and seals can usually be found locally at a bearing supply house as well as the bearings if needed. All the one's I have rebuilt if the fluid had been changed regularly the bearings were fine. The clutch friction plates and steels are from a Ford FMX transmission which can be purchased new on the internet for about $20 total. The complete instructions on rebuilding one is only like 12 pages and can be found in the mercury manual #2 which you can download for free. With a little imagination it can be done without any special tools. I have done several of these with 100% success and usually for under $100.
By the way what problem are you having with yours?

The above post is correct to some extent, and unintentionally misleading in another....The MercTrans is simplistic in design, but has unpublished internal design changes which if not addressed during an overhaul can result in clutch slippage, or planetary damage "there are things which can be done to improve strength and reliability". Also, Mercruisers service specifications for the MercTrans are not accurate for higher horsepower applications.........FMX? in general terms; any clutch pack that will operate in an FMX will work in a MercTrans, but there are different manufacturers, and it would be wise to find a premium fiber plate. The metal composition plates on the market do not have the higher cohesion ratio at relative MercTrans oil pressure. Mercruiser did design the MercTrans around excess Ford FMX inventory, but huge modifications were made to the components. I gutted a FMX on the bench a few weeks ago to satify my curiousity and there is no doubt that Mercruiser and Ford worked out a deal, but......"a boat is not a car, and a car is not a boat".......things are a little more complicated. In closing; any competent mechanic can overhaul a MercTrans; they are simple, but there is no margin for error. The original seal kit was inadequate for containment of maximum oil pressure.
