I'm looking to upgrade my 525SC flat tappet cam to a roller set-up.
It is a Gen V block.

I've looked at a few cams, & I keep coming back to this Comp Cams roller set-up. I'm looking to see if anyone is or has run this cam.

I'm looking to run a GM roller lifter set-up with this cam. I think with the lift at .566, I shouldn't have any problems with that.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

IMO, that cam has too much duration and not enough lift.

A better alternative is a Crane 168731. That is what I used in my 525SC. I picked up about 150rpms. I used the Crane lifters, springs and timing set also. I would use better lifters than the GM stuff. Best are Morels, then probably Isky, Crane or Comp.

I looked at the 731, & it seemed like the profile was very close to the flat tappet in there now. Does the fact of it being a roller vs a flat tappet, make the difference?

I also looked at the 741, I think that is the cam used in the 525EFI, but it seemed to have too much lift.

The lift on the Comp Cam being below .570 was the reason I thought the GM lifters would hold up.
I do know that if I go over .600 then I need to get the retro-fit lifters from Crane, or...

Call Bob Madera and get a custom cam for the same or less cost than an off the shelf cam. He will spec it out for your exact setup and it will make more power with no issues.

The benefit of a roller cam is the ability to get more lift and faster ramp speeds. You do not need or even want a lot more duration with only 454ci.

The stock flat tappet cam is .530/.551, 228/236, on a 114 lob sep.
I doubt you would see hardly any gain with the Comp cam you posted.

The 525EFI cam is a 741 ground on a 114 lob sep. It is even too large. Using too much duration will only push the rpm range higher to make your peak HP.

BTW, if you are tearing into the engine for just the purpose of the cam change, its really not worth it IMO. If it needs a top end refresh, then go for it. The cam upgrade is good for about 20-25hp. It will cost you about $1200-1400 by the time you are done.

I'm running one of Bob's cams also. He wil be asking ???? that have not evan come up yet in previous comments such as wet dry exhaust, gear ratio of outdrive just to name a few. I've had 4 different cams in my boat over time. I like his the best.

Unfortunately, this is not my choice...Engine dropped an exhaust seat & it sorta "banged" up a piston...Just my luck...lol, but I'm sure it could've been a whole lot worse.

Soooo, I decided that being my boat season is a bit shorter now, I'm going to be putting my "summer gas money" into a rebuild, & cam upgrade.

I've seen several other threads recommending Bob, I'll give him a call...
