Default Alternate Alternator?

Anyone know what would be a reasonably priced equivalent alternator to the stock Mercruiser unit? Mine is the 862031 unit from a 2000 454 MAG MPI. The replacement is $300 for Merc and $200 for an aftermarket equivalent. Is there a Parts store unit that will bolt and wire up? I can't find any cross reference.

+1 for their alternators.
But there starters do not hold up to good for High Compression engines.

I purchased an alternator from db and it would put out 14.85v. I called them, because I thought that was a bit much. They said it was fine. I had it for over a year before I intalled and tested it. So I just went to Auto Zone and picked up a replacement regulator and installed it. It runs at 14.2v now.
Researching the subject, Delco made a lot of versions of that regulator. Different configurations and voltages. So I wasnt certain of what the AZ replacement would put out.. Luckily it was what I wanted at 14.2v.
My suggestion is to call them and tell them you want one that puts out 14.2v, not any higher. They should be able to test one before it goes out. Would save you some grief.

Dick
PS.. mine was a three wire marine alternator. db pn - ADR0334/10Si Marine 3 wire.
