What stock 454 makes 425hp?
Merc made the MPI at 310 or 330, MAG at 385, and the REAL old 420's that came in front of TRS drives.....and if they are that old they would certainly need a refresh.

425 horse 454. Merc changed the from the 420 to the 425 near the end of production. I think when they put the Merc/Gill manifolds on them the horspower changed. The motors are identical to 420s.
The motors are TRS vintage. They have only been in freshwater.
They are not drop in. Carb to pan and no exhaust. Does have merc ignition.

I guess Chris got it right, he will be helping me with the swap.Just one thing, they do not need a rebuild. They run excellent. They have only been in Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.I am the second owner of this boat from new.
Thanks Chris

I don't recall a 454 ever being over 365hp stock in carb form. I know someone looking for a setup like this, but confused on HP rating being advertised.
So only necessary parts needed to be drop in are exhaust manifolds?
Any pics of engines?

you will need starters, alt, steering pumps, and possibly sea pumps,I might have a set of kpm pumps, but don't know if we will use them.If not they go with the engines.no flex plates or bellhousings.right now they are still in my boat ,and you can hear them run. They are coming out of a 90 top gun I will send you engine pictures when I get home.

That is correct. The crap manifolds that merc put on the 420's were such bad leakers that they wasted a lot of motors from the get go. My friend had a brand new Scarab KV in '89 and when his motors went merc replaced the garbage with gil exhaust, under warranty and they became standard equipment shortly thereafter. As far as factory 454 HP ratings I am, right now looking in my Mercruiser Service Manual number 9 titled Marine Engines GM V-8 Cylinder copyrighted in 1987 it lists 454 based motors rated at 370, 400, 420, and 440 Horsepower. They also offered a 482 cube at 460 horsepower and the 540 cube 575 horsepower.
I know that some don't want to believe the guy that just wants to move his motors but I think there is a chance he knows what he has.
And yes, believe it or not, there were more offerings than a 365 back in the day............................
