MAYBE..justy maybe, this is finally the time

As you all know HORBA has been trying to find the right vehicle to get real open ocean racing started up again. Well, after the Don Aronow Memorial Around Long Island Marathon that was held in September, we now have some serious interest in getting a worldwide series going with these old style marathons as the model.
TAG Heuer wants to be the series sponsor, Fiat Powertrain USA and Peters and May are exploring associate sponsorhsip possibilities of putting this series together.
TAG wants three races in the USA and two races in Europe. Peter's and May, great people, are looking of ways to assist with a sponsorhship, that would greatly reduce the shipping and handling costs.
WHO IS INTERESTED??
Races to be held in major cites, so this should assist with your own sponsor hunt. Major coverage worldwide, so your own boat sponsor will enjoy great exposure for his product or service.
The Around Long Island race was followed via satellite tracking by a great number of people in Europe. We didn't realize this until it was all over. When the British entry broke down, he rec'd many text messages from peoople that were watching in Sweden, Germany, Italy, France and England. A huge potential audience that TAG recognized immediately.
The ocean evens the playing field immediately and brings back the art and skill of real navigators. If you always said you wanted to race in these type of challenging conditions, now is the time to come forward and be counted.
HORBA extends a personal invitation to those who are interested Please contact me if you are seriously considering this from either a competitor or a sponsors point of view.
Don Aronow Memorial Around Long Marathon Sept 24, 2011
Bill Wishnick Memorial Marathon Fort Lauderdale to Key West Nov, 2011 (The date is whatever the Saturday before the race week starts in Key West)

All for more exposure but why not team up with an existing organization like OPA, SBI, UIM, etc, etc?
Even if its an exhibition / special event it would seem that utilizing their resources could help the event go off with less of a hitch.
What is the plan for these races? Historic boats only? How will the classes be broken up?
Neat idea, hope it comes to be.

Even if its an exhibition / special event it would seem that utilizing their resources could help the event go off with less of a hitch. They want to make it an ongoing series worldwide, not a special event or one off exhibition. The Europeans have tons of experience on running these races and we have lots of older racers that have experience as well..

Not just Historic boats, but modern edge stuff, like the new four engine 52 foot Outerlimits that ran against us in the Around Long Island race. This is something the sponsors want to see grow and build by using the old courses that have heritage.
Neat idea, hope it comes to be.

Having someone as big as TAG onboard will certainly open doors, add momentum, and longevity. I really hope this comes to fruition!
I'm very much looking forward to seeing this get off the ground, as well as seeing the LI race again next year!
One other comment/suggestion... you mentioned the race was followed via satellite tracking by a lot of people. I too used it to time and watch the LI race while I was still at home. I used this info to time/track where the boats were so I could go out and watch. Please consider looking into some type of mobile app for tracking in the future. I was unable to track the race once I left the house, my iphone wasn't able to load the online tracking. So many folks have smart phones these days... Obviously spectators at the event cant watch much more than a brief snapshot as the boats are going by. I'm sure live spectators would also love the ability to track the boats. I realize the same exact live tracking program might not be feasible for a mobile app (Flash is required), but I would think something that doesn't refresh as frequently would be quite doable. Live text updates, or something along those lines, would be great as well. If you don't offer these things, I don't see many people continuing to come out to watch and support the events... Then again, TV support is where it's at, but you do need a live presence as well. Those people that come all the way out to see and support the event shouldn't be penalized by being left in the dark... which was kind of how I felt once I left the house.
Again, great to see this gaining traction! Thank you for all your efforts!!!
