Default Thermostat Housing

Did Mercury ever make a updated thermostat housing for a Gen. IV 454 Magnum. I have the old style with the poppet balls.

You can make any tstat housing work. You just have to plumb it differently.

That style sucks. IMO the old-school two piece job that they used in the early to mid-80's is better than that thing. They have updated it though, a couple of times. There are a ton of aftermarket versions that work pretty well too.

What would you guys suggest and how should the lines be rigged? Any pictures would be appreciated and would I need to install some type of pressure relief valve of some sorts?

Ive been researching doing the same thing to my 1994 454 mag. What ive done is bought the sierra stainless housing (approx. $180) part # 18-1989. Then run a hose from the thermostat to the botom of the manifold on each side, use you existing hoses or you an order new ones that dont have the bend at the end right before they meet the thermostat. They will fit better. Then plug the hole in each riser, you dont run a hose to them anymore. I went to bam marine and looked up a 1995-1996 gen v 454. I believe you have a 1992-1994 gen v 454 like me. You can learn alot just by lookin at the parts schematics on their website. They also sell the riser plugs.

I have a 1990 Gen IV but have the same plan. Thanks for the input.
