Default i want to learn more about holley carbs-setup-afermarket-tuning....

i am looking into things to get the power up in my 454 i have run all year. and more then that i just want to understand carbs so that i can build and tune them to get the most out of not just my current motor but also future motors. i have a holley 750 double pumper with the choke assembly removed right now and i have been looking into the proform parts but i am reading stuff that i honestly do not understand. i have been building motors since i was in my early teens but we have always just thrown a carb on the top of the motor, adjusted it out and called it a day. it seems like there is a ton of stuff that you can do to pick up a good amount of power for the amount of cash invested. the proform parts are talking a 25-50hp increase for about 200 bucks worth of parts. just looking at the pro form carb body i can see how you could drastically pick up flow. i guess i am looking for maybe some links that will help explain this stuff, maybe a book? is there anything out there that is more marine specific? i just feel like i need to be much more educated here and since winter time is here i have time for research. thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated!

There are a bazillion books on Holley carbs, and also a bunch of videos. Type in "Holley carb books"...or "Holley carb videos" in the google bar.

Truthfully...I'd just call Holley's tech line, and ask those guys which dvd is the most helpfull, and has the most usefull info. Hell, they may even send you one free. Who knows...worth a shot.

Holley marine carbs are a different animal from their street versions. they give you almost no adjustment other than jet size, and are not covered very well in their tech literature. i've been fighting a rich condition at low rpm's for awhile now, and they haven't been very helpful at holley. even the dvd's that are out there don't cover marine set ups

The only thing different is the J tubes and shaft seals. All the other parts are the same.

no they're not, I've got my marine 4160 sitting here in front of me, and it doesn't even come close to the diagram they sent in the rebuild kit. for example, there's no sight hole and external float adjustment. the pumpdischarge assembly is different, and it's basically a sealed unit that's not meant to be adjusted

There are dozens of different versions of automotive and marine 4160's. Some have adjustable floats and some don't in both marine and auto versions. It just depends on specifically what you've got. Some 4160's look just like 4150's except they have a metering plate instead of a metering block with jets and PV. Holley kits are designed to include all the parts for numerous different versions of carbs in a single kit. Whichever 4160 you have, there is an automotive carb that is nearly identical.

Griff is correct. Those rebuild kits apply to many similar applications and/or models. The whole point of this is...THEY ALL WORK BASICALLY THE SAME WAY. Learn the hardcore basics, and fundamentals, and you'll be able to tune everything from an old 2-barrel Weber...to a alcohol-sniffin 4-barrel yukalaylee.
