Default top end or complete rebuild, Analise oil?

i pulled my engine, its a 500efi with about 350hrs on it. I planned on just doing the top end but was wondering if i should just do the whole engine since it out. I think it might a lil low on oil pressure. It is about 10-15psi hot at idle and about 35-40psi wot. Is there some were i can send my oil that will be able to tell me if my main bearings are getting worn out? i run mobile1 15-40. would a 20-50 or merc. 25-40 oil get my oil pressure up? could my gage just be reading a little low?
thanks for the help

I would do the bottom end as well while it is out, not that much more to do and then you would know it all was right. Not likely to have isssues for a long time.

You're going to want to pull the whole thing. You can probably do the cam bearings with the motor in, but you're likely going to have to pull it to do anything more. I guess you could lift it and not totally pull it to do the main and rod bearings, but you'll be neglecting your rings (which is silly at this point) and you'll be risking a huge mess in your bilge (and making the job a lot harder than it is) - not worth it.

As said in the top post, engine is out.

Do the complete rebuild now. Should save you a lot of trouble.

Before you go to a lot of expense check the gauge out and put another test gauge on ..check again.
Send a sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs:
416 E. Pettit Ave.
Fort Wayne ,In
46806
ph.260-744-2380
Call them and they will send you a small kit to take an oil sample. Ship it off to them ---- you will get the a lot of info back about your engine.
You will get a lot of chimeing in about the oil you are using but if it were me I would use a heavier oil.... Mobil 1 15 w-50 or M1 20w- 50 in your engine ..Lucas makes an additive you can use also add. Dont use that thin stuff. Last resort switch to Merc oil.
If after you try that and nothing is better its time for a rebuild !

Good luck
Jim

thank for the info. i requested a sample kit from blackstone about a week ago, so as soon as it comes in i will be sending it off to be looked at.
i guess i am going to have the whole engine refreshed. Any idea of what i am looking at cost wise? ballpark of course. anyone know anyone around pittsburgh that can do a marine rebuild?
thanks again
