Default Best way to seal through hull bolt holes on transom

I read a thread about it earlier in the year and just spent 45 minutes trying to find it, no luck.

I am closing up the bolt holes from my old bracket and am installing a new Stainless Marine bracket in its place. There are 18 5/8 holes. they juest need to be sealed, there wont be anything bolted in the same holes.

I was going to just go to home depot and get some wooden dowles, trim them and seal around them with microlight/silica. It sounds to ghetto to be the correct way. What is the best way?

the the screw holes from the old swim platform, i was going to Microlite those too with a puddy knife.

Thanks

heres the thread with the dash and screw holes. Its essentially the same except you use a dowel instead of core plugs. Nope . . . not ghetto at all . I would use a filler with a bit more density for bonding it though West Systems 404 is great this kind of project.

im gonna try and hook up a funnel system and mix a slow batch and try to let the wood in my transom absorb the resin, is that possible?

is it wet or dry rotted? If not no need to do anything other then use a good high density filler to bond in the dowel. If you wanted to get resin to pull into the void you'd be better off setting up a small vacuum system.

It is dry, I can just hear a hollow sound when you tap it.

I'm changing trim tabs. Most of the old screw holes will be behind the new K-plane transom plate. Should these be filled? Where do i find the West System products. I have two 3/8 holes and about 10 #14 screw holes

glassdave,

I have some small rot around the bottom transom bolt holes into the cutout area for the outdrive. I have dremeled out bad material and let dry. what do you recommend for structural filler in this area? I was thinking of using MARINE TEX .

Im curious as well.

Also can I use resin mixed with micro ballons for holes roughly 1" in diameter in a odd shape? (basically cant use a wood dowel) Ive used it before filling in screw holes and had good luck just curious if it can be used on a bigger hole or if I need a different filler/putty
