I have pushed my 8mb Nikon, and it's general purpose lens, past it's limit. For quite some time I have been contemplating an upgrade.
I have done all my research, and watched the prices. I decided to purchase the best 'non full frame' camera, available today. This decision yields two choices, Canon 7D and Nikon D300S. After studying each carefully, and reading virtually every review and comparison, I selected the Canon 7d.
Initial purchase
Canon 7d body
Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon 72MM UV Filter
Canon EW-78D shade
ScanDisc Extreme 8gb 60MB/sec UDMA card
Photo gear shots (5)

The flower was taken in my back yard today, at about 6ft away.

Same shot cropped

Hand held 30 minutes ago

Here is on of my house from the back, lit only by the Christmas lights, and pool.
Full manual 1/15 f/3.5 at 18mm 3200, hand held

Not bad for first 24 hours.

The 7D is a great camera, and is a nice starting point, but soon you'll discover, that Photography is an Expensive Hobby, just like Boating.
What software are you using to edit/ sharpen your photos? For the Race Weekends, you'll need one of the following:

OR BOTH

I use the 300, and Pete uses the 500, or you could trump any of us, and go out & buy the mother of all Super-Telephotos:

Just curious, which limits are you pushing with the 40D? What do you shoot, that requires more than what the 40D can do. The 40D is a spectacular body, that has few limitations against the newest tech.
