I have a small chip (about the size of a dime) on the hull of a '06 292. I think it is from the tip of a Fortress anchor (doh!). I am going to repair it this winter and looking for some help. I did a search and found out about Mini-Craft and they have 'patch paste kits', but their smallest one is 16oz and $125. This is the only repair I have and that would leave a LOT of left-over paste.
Any suggestions other than Mini-Craft? I plan to contact Formula to see if they could just send me a small sample of gelcoat. I have not worked with gelcoat before and I am looking for step-by-step instructions for a small repair like this one. Any help is appreciated!

I just repaired a similar chip on my boat using Spectrum's gel paste. Just tell them the Make/Year/Color. I believe the paste and hardner were about $40 shipped. The color matched perfect on my boat. The paste is very easy to work with and is thick enough to not sag (my chip actually covered the chine and extended under the hull). They include instructions for first-timers. I worked mine down starting with 220, then 400, then 600, then 3M heavy compound, 3M fine compound, and finally 3M Finesse.

EEYOUCH! buck and a quarter is nuts but they do have kind of a captive audience. Is that boat bright white? If so shoot me a PM with your address. I buy white in bulk and when i swap out drums there is always a thick paste/gel thats left over and i keep some of it for this kinda stuff. I have these small touch up bottles for the automotive side of my biz. Take care of the shipping and i can send ya on an oz or two.

Personally, I would have gone with "glassdaves" offer. I did a couple touch ups on my scarab with the Spectrum paste...and it WAS NOT an exact match. Kinda close, but you could see the difference. Dave knows his stuff...and is a great guy to talk to.

Hey Glassdave,
I have a little bit bigger repair that I need to do, thanks to the previous owner. What would you recomend as the ideal, budget friendly way to have this repaired? I have thought about just filling the gouges and wrapping the boat, but would value your opinion.

You can buy a pint of the original gel from Formula for under 30.00. Mix some harder in a small batch and apply multiple coats with a brush. It will take a couple coats to build it up. Once built up, sand it down with sandpaper on sanding block or paint stick. Wet sand, buff, done. Very Very simple repair and if you buy the gel from Formula it matches perfectly..Jeff Wurl
