Default New law requires boats and other vessels to have reflectors

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - D'Iberville officials are working to make it safer for boaters who head out at night.

A new law requires boats and other vessels to have reflectors on their vessels, at least every 15 feet, if they are docked in D'Iberville overnight.

This also applies to piers and marinas. City officials said the change stemmed from the death of a D'Iberville man last summer in Gulfport.

Forty-five-year-old, Raymond Schankin fell overboard after his boat hit a barge docked in the Industrial canal.

D'Iberville Councilman Steve Furney said the new boating law is a good idea.

"I was always told when something bad happens, something good comes out of it and that something was, we lost a good friend, a good citizen of D'Iberville. But something good is, that we're going to do everything in our power so that it doesn't happen again," Furney said.

Boat and pier owners who don't comply with the new law could face up to a $1000 fine or 90 days in jail.

If the reflectors match the boat and graphics is it really that bad of an idea?

May also come in handy when running a boat at night because we all know how well boat owners maintain their running lights.

Does the law state that the reflectors need to be permanently attached?

Just hang reflectors off your forward, mid, and aft cleat when anchored overnight.

lot a good reflectors do when they dont allow boats to run with docking lights on! And i doubt the running lights on our boats put out enough light to light up reflectors

I agree completly, i would like to see some serious fines for running with your docking lights on. Have you ever stopped dead in the water on a dark night because it looked like a car in the didtance where there should not be one?

The nice reflectors on the channel markers really help when I'm shining my Q-Beam on them at night... Just sayin...

But I digress...

Thats funny, and really illustrates the incompetence of MO politicians. If its such a great idea why don't they put reflectors on cars?

CORRECTION..... That's "MS" politicians, not "MO" politicians.

Not that they're any better, just call 'em as they are! HA!
