Default Choosing a thermostat

Can I just run to the parts store and get an automotive t-stat or will I have to order marine specific? It's a 97 model vortec sbc. Also what temp t- stat should I get?

If you're running closed cooling just get a regular 160 t-stat and drill a couple 1/8" holes in the outer ring. If you're raw water cooled get a 140 marine T-stat.
