Default 36 aluminum or steel trailer

What is major difference between the two other than weight? Steel VS Aluminum triple axle? What do each weigh, approximate? Thanks.

You can dip the aluminum in salt, a steel you'll have to hoist unless you want to watch it rust away in short order. My 38' Steel weighs 3,040 I would guess an aluminum would be substanstially lighter 6-800lbs lghtr. The aluminum trailers I have used seem like they flex quite a bit while the steel seems firmer and pulls better (granted I am sure every brand is different and an aluminum Myco will pull better than most steel).

You get what you pay for when it comes to trailers!!!

One of the nice things about aluminum is it will help sell your boat to a broader audience (ie people that live on the coast).

I've had two steel and two aluminum. I prefer aluminum.... No paint issues or corrosion. Had a buyer of my last boat say a trailer is a trailer over the phone. Changed his tune when he saw the thirteen year old aluminum trailer in top notch condition. I have very little maintaince on aluminum. Painted trailers would get rock chips, then that chip would rust when salt water hit it.

Great. thanks for the information. I'd prefer an aluminum for all the reasons mentioned.

My next trailer will be Aluminum as well. Every time I wax my current trailer I think how nice it would be if it was aluminum.

BIG difference between a bolt together Aluminum I-beam trailer and a welded Aluminum C-channel trailer. The latter will be heavier and stronger with less flex. Myco and Manning are best two manufacturers of such; and the only ones I would consider after owning a couple others.

Alum's also have tendency to float which could make things a little more challenging when loading. The two i used for our boats required us to back the trailer down when pulling up on the bunks. i learned we couldnt have the trailer down & ready as the wave action caused the trailer to begin to drift off center. These were both I beams, not sure as Sydwayz pointed out if a C channel would do the same.

Forgot that my smaller aluminum trailer with tandem axles did float depending on tire pressure!! Didn't really float to surface but neutral bouyancy that would cause it to drift slightly. Wouldn't take much ballast on trailer to stop it.

And if you have alot of wood bucks, or large bunks, they'll float also.
