Default Reconnecting a Raw Water Pump - Mercruiser 5.0

Mr. DIY here disconnected his seawater pump a week ago while waiting for West Marine to get in a new impeller, once replaced I couldn't remember the order of the two hoses on the back of the impeller housing. I have a Bravo III, 2001 with the pump on the left hand side facing the belts. Any help would be great!

The back of the housing should have IN and OUT labeling. In comes from the intake hose, out goes to the engine.

Default In/Out

I wish it did. The only indicators are RH Out and LH Out which I cannot decipher. Any idea what they mean?

The RH and LH refer to the rotation of the engine as to the right or left when facing the front. RH is the most common and which would put you your intake hose on the top of the pump. The intake hose is the one that leads to the transom assembly. The other hose that leads to the cooler and then the engine is connected to the RH OUT fitting on the bottom.

I hope this helps,
GF?

True, RH and LH refer to the rotation of the engine. However rotation is determined by standing behind the boat and looking at which way the flywheel would be turning. If the flywheel is turning counter clockwise that is LH rotation. Clockwise would be RH rotation. Therefore if you were facing the front of the engine and the belts and pulleys are turning clockwise the rotation would be LH. ALL MERCRUISER "STERNDRIVE" ENGINES ARE LH ROTATION. RH engines are only used on inboard applications. So LH out would be the hose going to the engine.

One other thing hopefully you lubricated the new impeller for the intial startup. Liquid dish soap works well.

remember, with serp belt the seawater pump runs backwards on most, and vbelts they run right.....just bump start and see which waypulleys turn. so depending on style of belt, things change.

Default Thank You

Gentlemen - Thank You. I realize now I have it connected incorrectly. I did run the engine for about 10 minutes in this configuration - temperatures were higher at about 160 which led me to believe I made a mistake. I see now that I do have an LH configuration and traced everything right down through the belts. I'm going to take the whole thing back apart to be sure the impeller survived and get it right this time.
