Boat is for sale without engine. Do any of you guys have an idea, what kind of power I should be looking for if I want to run about 65. She ran low 50's with the 135 I had on it, but not sure, since I did not have a GPS. It spun a LaserII 23 about 5500+ rpm's, so I quess it ran 51-53 or so. You guys think a 175 can do it, or should I look for a nice used 200 2 stroke. Though it would be a fun toy for us and the kids of our friends ect. Good way for those boys and girls to learn how to handle a boat.

Boat is a 89' Feltcher 160.

I used to have a Bornett 17, which is a Danish boat that is nearly identical to a Fletcher 170. I got that boat in 1989 with a 200 HP Merc. Then later I fitted Yamaha 200 Pro-V that had been on a Fletcher 160.

We did not use GPS back then, but I am sure it will break 65 MPH with 200 HP (depending on prop off course).

Then later I got a Fletcher 19 (1997 model) with 225 HP (3 litre) and later again I bought 225 HP Optimax.

I also tried a the 3 litre Merc 225 HP on another Bornett 17 and that is really a handful to handle, but so much fun. I would say it is too wild for the inexperienced.

By the way the boat on the picture seems to sit on a Brenderup trailer, which is from Denmark, so I am wondering where you are located ?

Congrats on finding your 1st boat, I have no idea where my 1st boat is, a 1986 17' Checkmate w/ a 130 Yamaha, great starter boat for me.

I'm kinda concerned, that the weight of the 3,0 will create handling problems. The recomendation for max weight was about 350 or so punds and 115 hp if I remember correctly. Did merc make a 225 2,5 non mercury racing? Thinking about finding an engine from 98'-02'.

Obviously cehck the hull for rot, possibly reinforce the transom if you will let your kids use it. Kids have a way of finding something's breaking point. (I sure did)

If you are going to have your kids drive it you may not want to put huge power on, especially if they are going to be taking out friends....
