A friend of mine is asking how to remove his anti fouling paint . I've had no experience with this so I thought i would put it out there.

Here is what a friend of mine sent me on how he removed bottom paint off a 31' Tiara Open. A lot of people have it soda blasted off.


Started with strippers. I tried a couple, this one worked the best...west
marine carries it but probably not enough. I had to order it. I used
about 8 gallons total from what I remember.

The first layer came off hard and the stripper didn't get very deep but the
second coat of stripper would take off about 3-5 layers of paint. Looking
back it may have helped to score it first with sandpaper to help it eat in.
It also doesn't go nearly as far as it says it will either and the thicker
the better. If it dries your screwed and you start over so it needs to go
on thick. I read online you could put plastic over it to keep it wet but I
never tried it.

After that I had some areas that were down to barrier coat and some that
still had 2-3 layers on.

Since you need to sand anyway to get the new barrier coat to adhere well I
went at the rest of it with a high powered orbital vacuum sander that I
rented from a marina for $50/day and also used a dewalt orbital for the
chines and hard to reach areas.

Use captain lee's spra strip removal if your trying to bring back the gelcoat.

I did it last year on a sailboat, used west marines water based remover. Definitely not a fun job, throw it on thick and let it sit, do not let it dry.
