I am not sure how many of you visit the CBPBA website; here is an event that's scheduled for June 11 & 12.

Want to earn a FREE MEMBERSHIP to the CBPBA? Read all the details here.

The CBPBA needs approximiately 60 sweep boat volunteers for the Chesapeake Bay Great Bay Swim on June 12, 2010. We need all boat types, including larger cruiser yachts, sportfish, center consoles, performance boats and even several Jet Ski's (4 stroke models only please). Sweep boat volunteers to secure the swim course that day, it's a blast, and your fuel expense could be tax deductible.

CBPBA SVP Jeff Whetzel is coordinating the list of volunteers again this year, so contact Jeff (username: the other woman) via PM by clicking here, or via email by clicking here.

To date, The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim has raised in excess of $1,000,000 for charity. The proceeds were distributed to the following worthwhile organizations:

The March of Dimes, Maryland Chapter
The National Aquarium, Bay Restoration Project
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation
The Chesapeake Trust
The Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association
CRAB- Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating

Your participation and expense could be tax deductible. Check with your tax attorney or accountant for details. The March of Dimes will distribute forms at the Captains Meeting and Party on Saturday night, June 11th. The Meeting and Party will be held at Kentmorr Restaurant and Marina

Any captains who participate in this event as a sweep boat, and have never been a CBPBA member before, will receive a free membership to the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association for the remainder of the 2011 season.

Please don't wait to sign up. We need a strong showing this year so be sure to volunteer now. Contact Jeff (username: the other woman) via PM by clicking here, or via email by clicking here.

As always, many thanks for stepping up and volunteering to help the March of Dimes. More details to follow below.

The Chesapeake Great Bay Swim Event, Captains Package information.

This is one of the coolest events the CBPBA has become so well known for. It's also an opportunity to get a free CBPBA membership, help raise money for a worthy cause, have a great weekend of fun using your boat in a Poker Run, and possibly take the event expense as a deduction on your taxes. (* see notes below *)

On June 11 & 12, the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association will kick off the Great Bay Swim weekend event, a fun weekend featuring a lot of freebies for our member volunteers. The CBPBA provides logistical and on-water sweep patrols for the swimmers for a few hours on Sunday, but there's a whole lot more!!

Nearly 1000 swimmers will participate in 2 swimming events, a 4.4 miler and a 1 miler under the Chesapeake Bay Bay Bridge to raise money in a charity event for the March of Dimes. The start of the event is targeted for morning, so we should be done very early afternoon.

DATES AND ACTIVITIES
***********************************
Saturday, June 11
  • We'll have a poker run for all types of boats (cruisers, runabouts, center consoles, go-fasts). Volunteers are automatically eligible to participate in the poker run, which is offered for a reduced rate. Other activities include:

Notes:
<*>You are volunteering to work for a charity fund raising event for the March of Dimes. Consult with your tax advisor to find out if you qualify for itemized tax deductions of your gasoline and related weekend expenses. A volunteer confirmation form will be provided to you at the end of the weekend event.
<**>Free annual membership to the CBPBA (worth $75) is for new first-time members only who complete the assigned Sweep Patrol on Sunday.
<***>RaceComm and HQ for Sweep Patrols on Sunday is the Bay Bridge Marina at Hemingways

The CBPBA provides an infrastructure for land and sea safety, sweep support, as well as communications. Working alongside various law enforcement agencies and the United States Coast Guard, the sweep fleet is on the water providing safety for swimmers as they make their way under the 4.4 mile span of the Bay Bridges. The event is a huge amount of fun, and includes a Captains Party on Saturday evening after an organizational meeting. Last year we had more than 45 boats in the fleet. This year, we're also having an optional poker run for Saturday.

Logistics
We'll all meet at Kentmorr on Saturday evening at 5PM SHARP!. There will be huge party and mandatory Captains Meeting at KentMorr Restaurant and Marina on Kent Island, at 5PM on Saturday June 11. During the meeting, we'll brief all volunteers on responsibilities and assignments. We will distribute a map with designated sweep positions so you'll know where to patrol. We'll also hand out safety equipment and explain what to expect during the day. The safety equipment will include a private radio, numbers and a flag for your boat to identify you as an official Sweep Boat.

On Sunday morning June 12, you'll need to be on station at the Bay Bridge. The final times will be determined by the organizers and NOAA 1 week prior to the event. You can expect to be on the water for a period of about 3 to 4 hours max, patrolling an assigned and designated area. RaceComm and our sweep captains will direct the fleet during the event.

Is this really a tax deductible event?
In most cases, yes. More than likely, you could take your fuel and related expenses off your taxes. The March of Dimes will distribute tax forms to all volunteers. Depending on your situation, expenses to participate in this event could be tax deductible. Please check with your tax advisor.
