Default Cracked Trailr Axle

On the way to the lake today I noticed one of my trailer wheels had some serious negative camber. It turns out one of my axle tubes cracked about 3" inside the spring perch. I looks like it was sliced with a hack saw. There is no rust or corrosion, I have no idea how it happened.

Is it okay to have something like this welded? There is a welder in town I trust, but didn't know if it was a bad idea for something like this. My boat is stuck at the lake, so I'm looking for a quick turnaround, and I'm not in the mood to replace an axle.

axles are relitively cheap. a good trailer shop should have one in stock ,and its an easy fix. I would only weld as a temp repair, there is a reason it ripped,or bent like that. is it old? rusting from inside? or did you hit something?3 axle trailers take alot of pressure on the wheels and axles especially when backing into tight corners.

A new axle should only be a couple hundred bucks. There is a trailer place by Dubberts in Port Clinton.

Or if they won't sell you an axle there is Ron's Trailers in Oregon (Toledo), they have a ton of axles on their lot. Bought one for a hog roaster a couple months ago...

Thanks for the input, I tried to find an axle this morning and no luck. My boat is at a temporary dock, and I need to retrieve it today.

I went to the welders this morning, and he is going to repair the crack, and weld a reiforcement to the bottom to support the weak area even more.

There is no rust, and the trailer has almost no miles on it. It's always been inside, and well taken care of.

I think I figured out what did it though...

Last weekend I hit a semi tire on the interstate at 70 mph, that wheel too the brunt of the impact. It must have weakened it then, and I didn't notice it until the camber was out of whack.

I'll take some pics of the repair when I pick it up tonight.

What brand trailer? manufacturer should be able to find you one or build one pretty easily.

Be ready with a few measurements such as, spring center-to-center length, size and type axle tube, backing plate-to-plate measurement, end-toend length measurement, drop-down measurement if any, under or over spring u-bolt and number of lugs on the hub.

This makes me a little sad..... I was actually looking at purchasing a new manning trailer..... I had heard great things on OSO about them before this thread.
