Default Rustproofing: Ziebart ? or others ?

Just picked up an 09 Ram with 14K on it, took a look underneath and there are already signs of rust. After having the rockers and door on my 01 F-150 supercrew rot right through, I want to take some precautions with the new truck and try to preserve it as well as possible. Called ziebart, they will sandblast, rust covert spray, pressure wash and steam clean before applying undercoating for right around 500.00 Living in NY they put TONS of salt on the roads and need this truck to last more than 10 years like the ford did. Anyone have opinions, experiences with Ziebart or other methods, all opinions and comments are welcomed. Thanks Chris

I used to always get Ziebart up until about the mid 90's. I have had 7-8 year old cars/trucks with 140K plus with no signs of through rust on the body. GM/FORD and DODGE. Frame/underbody rust is there but bodies are solid and this is in a tough Wisconsin climate.

I feel they are much better built and hold up to body rust much better where rustproofing is not necessary.

If you do get rustproofing, have them prove to you the door panels and other hidden areas . I have friends that used to get rustproofing and later had an accident and found out there were alot of areas that did not get proofed. They went through the work to drill holes and plug but to rustproof.

I would stick with ziebart, yes its worth it,it will even make the cab of the truck quieter from the road noise..i use to work their when i was in my late teens and i did a few of my friends parents cars..the stuff holds up well..

stay away from the line x under coating, all they do is spray oil on your frame and it comes off after about a year, they say you have to do follow up visits yearly..

as for the rockers, get some clear film that they use on the front of motor homes, stick it on the rockers and the rear lower part of the 1/4 panels behind the tires then trim off the excess..

My mother in law had a 93 Grand Prix that she had Ziebarted when new...... she eventually scrapped it because it wouldnt pass emissions without a pile of $$ spent with no real guarantee of a pass...the paint was kind of faded but the body on that car was just amazing....and thats up here in this salt fest.....it was kind of sad to see it head to the bone yard.

I lived in Nova Scotia, Canada where they treated snow/ice covered roads with rock salt; I always used "Krown" rust control or "Rust Check" (yearly applications).

Read the owners manual/warranty book to make sure you do not violate the manufacturers warranty.
