Default shifter grinding

So.. to be expected out of a boat this old. 29 OL 1999 with a single 454 mag mpi. the boat feels like metal on metal when shifting. It feels more like it's sliding metal on metal and I think it's in the handle, not the cable or tranny. On this boat, is it a simple matter of unscrewing the shifter mount plate and the whole assembly will come out? never jacked with any of this but I'm sure the local mechanic will find around 2000 wrong for a minor issue.
thanks..................tbirdusa (Stephen)....

Take out the 4 screws it'll lift out, but you'll have 2 cables and wiring attached. I'll be surprised if it's the shifter. When's last time you put cables in it?

never have. Is it a straight forward job? Where should I order them from? I don't think we have a Baja dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks anymore. I'm spening 10 days at the lake from 7/1 - 7/11 and would love to get it fixed then.

i dont think the cables would be baja specific they would mostly be by length and style of shifter
