Do you have any power figures for the O'Alberta Hydro turbine race boat? What is the rpm and shaft rpm and what prop? I'm looking for other applications for my "On-Board-Dyno" which can measure the TQ, rpm and calculate HP of any shaft. Would this info be useful for the turbines? Thanks, Marty.

Hi Marty,
The engine we run, and virtually every other Turbine powered Unlimited Hydrolane uses, is a T-55 L7C Lycoming. These were/are used on the Chinook helicopter.
From Lycoming they are rated at 2,650 HP. In our configuration at 4.3 GPM of fuel they are app. 3,050 HP. That's running at 110% of N-2 speed and app. 102% of N-1 speed. RPM wise that's app. 17,000 going into the V drive which is then reduced anywhere from 44% to 54% to achieve prop speed. Our props are 3 blades, 16 inch diameter with pitch between 24 and 26 inches. Rake angle is between 20 degrees and 25 degrees.
I can't share the torque figure with you or my engine guys will have my head
I can say the torque curve is extremely flat.
Marty, you're welcome to join us at any of our races this year and have a look at whatever you need. We will be testing 2 Saturdays from now at Madison IN on the Ohio River. Please feel free to come by that Saturday if you wish. Otherwise check our schedule at hydroprop.com.
BTW, we do not have neutral or reverse. Once the engine is lit it's always in gear. When we trailer liight it, the shaft from the turbine to the gearbox is disconnected. We start them on the trailer and in the water at ground idle, which is app. 48% of power.
Take care Marty, and good luck with your project.

WOW! Those are some numbers. This 'OBD' has been setup on top fuelers about 9000rpm and ?less than 10,000 TQ. THye won't tell the actual numbers. They pegged it when calibrated to 5000 ft. lbs. TQ. I would love to see it on your hydro. I'll follow your schedule. Thanks, Marty.

Puder,
Love to take you for a ride, but we'd have to duct tape you to the deck or rear fairings. Unlimited Hydroplanes, while 32 feet long and 14' 10" wide, only seat 1 person in a very narrow F-16 enclosed cockpit. Sorry
Marty and Friends, you're all welcome to visit at any of our races. Normally Fridays and Saturdays are testing and qualifying days and I've got plenty of time to share with you and show you our stuff. Sunday is race day and a little crazy. For those in the midwest, I invite you to our testing session on Saturday June 15th. at Madison, IN.
Thanks,
Steve David

Dixie Doug,
Indeed I remember meeting you at the Galleon when Gene and his Family were visiting. And yes sir, I remember the 1995 Madison race. In fact every morning when I think I'm just going to jump out of bed and hit the gym, I'm reminded of what happened at turn 1
The Madison rescue crew was great!
Hope to see you on the 15th Doug,
Steve

Hey Steve, we may try to get down there to Madison. I'd love to see you race. Plus, I still owe you lunch. We'll know more in a week as Linda broke her foot about 5 days ago. It depends on how well she feels getting around on crutches.
How did your Black Thunder turn out? get the speeds you were wanting with the new engines?
We've had a copuple of great outing on our new boat, although I could use a lesson or two on the fine art of trim and tabs.
If we don't get down there. Good luck
Mark

Hi Mark,
Linda didn't break that foot kicking you did she

Hope you guys can make it down. If not for our test session try to make it for the races on the weekend of July 4th.
Glad you're enjoying that beautiful Super Hawaiian of yours! You'll get use to the tabs and trim. It's just a matter of time and experience in varying conditions.
Take care Mark, thanks for writing, and we'll pick you up on that lunch deal soon!
