Default can i have some advice on grit sizes for painting my boat?

hello everyone.
i am currently refurbing a 1985 four winns 225 sundancer. it will be running good, dropping back in a mercruiser 5.7 engine. the boat is pretty worn, but good condition. i dont plan on getting to crazy with the paint job. i have a formula 233 that im refinishing and taking my time.the formula is the boat that i will be keeping for myself. that will be a year or so till that is ready. but as for the four winns, my plan is to put 2 seats in it, with a carpet and quick paint job. im new to painting boats. i plan on maybe doing roll and tip , instead of the spray gun. i have been involved with painting motorcycles, and cars. my question is, what sandpaper grit do i need for my d/a sander, for a quick and cheap paint job that will do the job? again, i plan on fixing this up cheap, and good enough, and then will be selling it after a few rides. so then i can put the money into my formula 233 new engine and outdrive. im just looking to make it look a little better then it does now. i have pictures, but i cant seem to be able to post them. if somone can help me with that as well, it would be much appreciated. thanks , nick

roll and tip NO NO NO!!! looks like chit..... Just 320 on a DA then put down a cheap primer sealer then a cheap single stage acrylic enamel or just 400DA and paint with no primer, but don't roll or tap it that will look getto as hell. It will run you a couple $100 now but you get more money then you spent when you sell it, when people see it shine.

I have only had good luck roll and tipping Pettit White topside paint. It has good thixotropic properties, but the Pettit Blue topside in the sun turned out pretty bad, maybe I should have thinned it a little more. If I had to do it again I would have sprayed it.

I have had great luck with my Scarab that was sprayed with DuPont single stage Chroma One, going on 8 years. DA'd and then shot right on to right on to the gel. It is hard as a rock.

I just got done shooting my little $900 inland lake beater in PPG Omni single stage. I can tell it is not as good of a paint and I might regret not using Chroma One again. We'll see.

thanks a lot for the info. i will go the spray way . i watched the roll and tip on youtube, but was not thinking about when the sun hits it your gonna see lines. the four winns again is more like an investment to put into my formula 233 restoration. i want it to be worth as much as possible. im trying to post pictures but having trouble.

You need to be a paying member or host them from a site like Photobucket.
