Default question about marine paint and clearcoat

i see that some automotive paints can be purchased with clearcoat added in with paint. so it makes the process quicker and no clearcoating needed after paintjob. is there a marine paint like this? or does it need to be sealed with somthing special? thanks

Automotive finishes come it two basic systems, single stage and base coat clear coat. Yes an automotive single stage like PPG's Concept works great on boats (above water line). If you are looking for a nice white try PPG fleet number 91050, its a very clean white that goes with any color. The biggest mistake i have seen with do-it-yourself paint jobs is selecting the wrong color, cant tell ya how many times i have heard someone say i got the brightest white they had. Huge mistake. So called refrigerator whites look terrible and will make even a new interior look dirty. I have researched whites for years and stumbled on the factory match to my 38 while doing some warranty work on some 38 ZX's about ten years ago. I was able to get the ppg # from the factory and have used it ever since. Its actually a slightly grey color when you compare it to a mixing base white but on a boat in the sun looks fantastic plus because of how clean the color is it goes with any stripe or interior color very well.

Hey Glassdave,

I've been trying to source this paint since you've mentioned it so many times. I'm about to do a rebuild and thought I might paint, so I thought I'd try pricing this stuff. But I can't find it online. How much does it cost, and where do you get it?

Thanks!
Stan

Awlgrip says you can mix 10% of the clear into the final (3rd) coat of dark paints
