Hey Guys,

I have a 1988 22' steve stepp velocity with a 454 bored .30 over (420HP) with a bravo 1 drive. I had a 23p mirage on the boat and got 63 mph out of her. I put a 27p labbed and cupped hydromotive 4 blade and got a 10 mph gain but I could only get 4200 RPM's out of it. I'm looking to see what I should try next and if anyone would be willing to exchange or buy the 27p I have now. Its in great shape only used a hand full of times. Thanks

That's a huge pick-up in MPH for just a prop change! I wouldn't expect any more MPH with another change since the bigger prop (within reason) is usually faster. I'd stick with the Hydro Q4 (Dkerns dialed in his late 1980's 22' in with Q4) and try a 23" to 25" one to get a RPM reference point. What RPM were you spinning with the 23" Mirage?

I agree, it is a bigger difference than I expected. With the 23p I stopped the rpm's at 4800 but had more to go. Its a new motor and didn't want to push past that cause I don't have a REV limiter. I talked to velocity in sanford, fl. and they recommended that prop. Unfortunately the prop shops said they can't repitch hydromotive props. I was thinking maybe a 25p Q4 labbed and cupped would be the way to go. Need to find one and sell mine or maybe work out a swap.

Check with Hall Propeller. I am pretty sure Mike can re-pitch Hydromotive props and he knows Velocity.

What RPM range is the is the motor built to run in ? IMO your better off watching the gauges while working the throttle , and skip using a rev limiter . If your propped right , it should only be a problem when you launch .

I've got Dkerns old Velocity 22. Runs great with the Hydro QIV. Its a 26 repitched to a 27. I've run low 90's(92-93) gps at 6100-6200 rpms. 3 blades like a Mirage have too much bow lift. Slower speed and longer to plane.

What kind of engine are you running? Sounds bigger than what I have.

My guess is the 25" should have you at around 5000 RPM under the same conditions , and your 23" should take you up to aprox 5800 ?
