Question New Props?

I have 1997 29' fever with stepped hull. I have recently rebuilt the motors and added a few more HP. I was running twin 454 mags turning 25" Hydromotive Quad IV's at about 5000 Rpms. I now have about 425 Hp per motor. Any suggestions on what size new props?

What rpm's are the rebuilt motors turning with the 25's? You can figure a couple hundred rpm loss for every inch of pitch you go up.

I borrowed a set of 28" Bravo 1's. I was able to turn those at about 5000 rpm's also. I have not tried the 25's yet, that will be this weekend. I believe that the Bravo props are measured a little differenly than the Hydro's. I was able to pick up 7 mph in cruise range, but the boat really handled poorly at WOT. Got real squirelly. I was thinking about 27" Hydro's, Any suggestions?

PS I'm still running the stock Merc ignition, with stock rev limiter.

Mr. weazelle,
You would need one pitch smaller on the Hydro's to reach the same rpm's of the Bravo 1's. Sounds like your boat is running strong. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

MR Weaselle, I would try 26p hydros. I have been through this prop testing with my 29 that has 535hp on a dyno. I just bought a pair of 28p hydros from a fellow on this site. I put them on and was very dissapointed. another guy ask if the props were spinning in or out . I replyed out, he said try spinning them In. so I swaped the props and tested the boat In reverse this fountain is well on the way to recovery, what a difference I am running 5200 at 85 on gps . good luck

How can you tell if your props are spinning in or out? Which is better/faster?

lefty, if you look at your props and the leading edge on your port side is turning counterclock wise then your props are turning out if the leading edge is turning clock wise then your props are turning in. I was telling that I bought a pair of 28 hydro's put them on and was very dissapointed the boat went through the water like a dolfin. And I could not correct it without add a lot of tab. I then swaped the props and drove the boat in reverse. after trying this the boat is at least 3mph faster and handles like a dream. them I had to go to the shift cables and swap them around so I could drive the boat in forward. all this did not take more than two hours and is the best two I have spent getting it right.
