Im brand new to this site and go fast boats. I posted this in the BAJA section but no responses yet...so im sorry but just looking for some info.
Im looking at a 95 Caliber 22 Team Thunder with a 454 / 425HP, bravo1.
This hull has the TINY cubby bed area. What is everyones take on this boat? Im looking into a bit older boat as funds are thin.
Is it a solid well made hull? What about the motor? it now has 425HP from what i believed was 330hp. How well does this hull handle? fast with this motor HP? Things to look out for? What about wood used in construction...stringers etc.. when did they stop using wood? Im looking for a fast fun boat for the family...getting ot of my fishing boat. Any help, suggestions or comments would be greatly appriciated in helping me make a decision before i fork out some cash. Ive also been looking at other Bajas like the hammer and other 20ish foot Baja models.
Thanks guys!

Pretty lodaded question. Without knowing where or how the boat was used in the last 16 years it is hard to say what you can expect. It is a boat best used on smaller lakes. Decent boat for the money. But with upgraded power, you can expect some stress cracks in structual areas if it went wake hopping alot. As far as your wood use question, Baja used wood in all its boats. Fast fun family boat? not sure this boat fits the bill. you can get 4 in it comfortably, but 5 if you need to. You may want to look at a bow rider with upgraded power. The cabin is real small on the 20-22 baja's and not much room for coolers etc. Not sure on kid ages but just listening to how you posted the question it sounds to me like you really want a go fast but your stated needs might be better served jumping into a 24-26 bowrider you will get more bang for your buck. Just my .02

Your exactly right.... a bit of a loaded question lol.....
Yes i want to go fast (65-75mph fast for me lol) and I will have up to 5 max, usually 4, me my wife and two young ones.
I like fast, loud, fun and wife like fun, cruzing with a place to get out of sun if need be.
I cant go to big as i need to be able to fit it in a 3 car garage and 22 is about my max considering the trailer length along with it.
I have no idea on the history other than it has had two owners. I am going to look at it this wed. and will have a better idea on whether it looks the part and even fit the bill.
What would you guys tell someone to look out for when buying a older Baja? Things i need to keep eye out for and things / tools i may want to take in order to do a decent evaluation of the boat. Is there an easy way to check the stringers and transom for issues? I just dont want to get into something I will regret later on if i have to tear it all apart for repairs. The motor I can handle but structural fiberglass issues Id rather not deal with.
How would the Caliber compare to say the Hammer? They look pretty much the same. I havent really considered a bowrider just due to the fact I like the performance look of these enclosed go fast hulls.

From what I understand with Baja, the mid 80's boats are pretty solid, but the late 80's, early 90's boats had some issues with the factory not sealing the drain holes that let the water run back to the bilge. I don't know when they corrected that issue.
You may want to post in the Baja section of the forum. You'll get solid, fast answers there on Baja construction. Getting 420 hp out of a 330, from what they say on here, isn't that big of a deal. What may be a big deal is who did the work. I would ask for a build sheet and try to get a good idea of what was done. Post the performance upgrades on here to see if the educated on here would agree that it would equal the Hp output that the owner is claiming. I've never ridden in 22' Caliber, but I would think it should do low to mid 70's with 420 hp.
What kind of water are you going to be riding on (inland lake, river, etc.)? If you're going to have little ones on board you may want something bigger if you're going to be driving fast. Off-site storage is generally fairly cheap ($30 a month ish) depending on your boat, and you can generally get something closer to your launch. The wear and tear on your vehicle and gas would make up for all of it if you use it enough.
