Default Cam / Prop question

Have some questions involving cam/prop. I'm in a 24 Ft Baja Outlaw, currently running what looks to be a stock 26p 4 blade merc prop.

Motor is a 450hp 550ft/lb 502. The cam seems like a baby cam, but I realize this isn't a car, and I'm from a car world. I'd laugh at the duration and what not if this was in a street car.
211 / 230
0.510 / 0.540

Boats best cruise seems to be right around 3200 or so, but that's where it's making 550 ft/lb's.

I hit 70mph running up river, with a half a tank, and me alone. That was at about 5200-5300 rpm's. It started to chine to I trimmed down and backed out of it, but it seemed like it had a bit more to go. The boat launches right out of the hole and planes with no issues. 3200 is right on about 40 mph.

I run with people with some much larger boats than mine, and I realize i'm never going to run 100 mph, nor would I want to, but I am looking at reducing cruise RPM ~55-60mph if possible. Should I try to give it more prop?

With all that being said, how about a cam this winter? Any recommendations?

If you're a car guy, you know, more cam, more power, at a higher RPM. You might think about a steering stabilizer to control the chine walk, before you make it go any faster.

Fair enough. Obviously, I can go crazy huge cam, and make some nice peak numbers, but on the water that doesn't equate. I'm minus gears that I have in a car to keep me in a usable powerband.

I'm guessing I also need to watch overlap/duration as I don't want it to start drinking water from the exhaust. Is there any common cams the 502 guys are running?

Many people running 600hp+ 502's.
They are running cams over 230 at .050" and of course aftermarket cyl heads.

So yes.........you have lots of room to grow with power.

Time to start thinking about exhaust systems if you don't already have one.

You are pretty well dialed in with what you have and your numbers a very good for a 24OL.
I wouldn't change anything with the current prop set up until you decide to upgrade the power or change the cam.
