Question Duramax LB7 Injector Balance Rates

I know what the book says the numbers are supposed to be.

Someone please explain how they are relevant and what does the test do? If there is no flow meter how can a scanner "know" that an injector is faulty or leaking?

The injectors themselves are pretty much a "dumb device" as there is no circuitry in the body of the injector so the only thing that touches it is fuel. Right???

I don't see anything on the injectors that implies bi-directional communication..

It is based on the "smoothness" of the idle. The ECM is constantly trimming and adding fuel at idle to stabilze the idle. Based on the currently firing cylinder (crank and cam position sensors) the ECM looks at engine speed to determine if it's speeding up or slowing down at that instant, or immediately after....THUS can determine if and injector is flowing too little or too much.

The balance rate you are seeing (in mm3) is how much is being added or subtracted to achieve a "smooth" idle.

Exactly, anything over 5 is an issue

Thanks for the answers -

I'm getting mixed info. Dealer says 7 or higher is bad.

Edge Book says 4 or higher at idle and 7 or higher in gear at idle.

Engine up to operating temp, +/- 4 in park at idle

Are you getting white smoke at idle....or at any time really?....that's a sure sign of bad injectors

No smoke yet. No real problems. I do see a little bit of black smoke if I step on it.. I just got the Edge Tuner installed and it shows the rates for you.

I wanted to know more about what I'm looking at. I had another set of injectors installed back in November and they have about 12000 miles on them. So far, they are all in spec.

They did not replace the supply lines though so I fully expect the issues to return at around the next 20k mark.

The dealership said they'd recommend replacement with + or - constant 7. They never mentioned the number 4.

Also, the Edge manual says to test them at idle first thing while cold. It does not state anything about a warm, normal temp engine.

Just trying to wade through this like everything else and learn as much as possible.

Thank you guys for your input!

Industrial Injection in Utah and Kennedy (link below) both seem to be on top of the LB7.

The tech tips covers most of the issues I've had since day one.
