Probably not...there was sometimes just a heck of a lot more of them in a row, for much greater distances, when racing truly "Offshore". :-)
Of course in reality, the "waves" everyone discusses here aren't really "WAVES"....

Don't fret too much about "back then." There are those of us who write the future and then there are those who write history books; they are the same people who just simply don't know how to cope with the expiration of their relevance and they are sadly relegated to languishing in the dismal past.
