Default Enclosed Cockpit & Safety!?

After seeing pictures of Big Thunder I was amazed at the amount of damage to the structure of the cockpit. This type of enclosure looks similar to those on the Platinum, Mystic and others. IS THIS NOT A TRUE SAFETY COCKPIT SYSTEM, OR IS IT ONLY FOR STYLING AND AERODYNAMICS?

I thought the enclosed cockpits were supposed to protect the people inside, especially under the same circumstances that Big Thunder experienced.

Can someone please elaborate more on this subject? Or is this one of those things that everyone thought was good enough until it got a reality check?
